TODAY'S GOOD NEWS ... Nov. 30, 2005

Welcome! Two Features, Lots of info. We begin with two recent quotes:

Quote of the Year: 1
"The Debate is over. We have the science. And we know the time for action is now." --
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, re: climate change & global warming, 10/2005. (1)

Quote of the Year: 2
"Cities consume 75 percent of the world's natural resources. There's plenty that cities can do - San Francisco is committed to reducing global warming emissions to 20 percent below 1990 levels by 2010. But don't just listen to our rhetoric. Hold us accountable. There's so much more we can do." --
Mayor Gavin Newsom (San Francisco), 9/2005. (2)

Feature 1: City & State Leaders Take the Lead

Despite continuous denial from our national policy makers about the existence of Global Warming & Climate Change, progressive cities & states around the US are implementing action plans to build a new economy, now.

  • "In June, Mayor Greg Nickels of Seattle launched a campaign to lower U.S. global warming emissions on a city-by-city basis. Cities that sign his agreement pledge to reduce emissions below 1990 levels." Thus far, 174 cities have agreed to participate. Strategies involve investing in clean energy, energy efficiency, green building practices, and recycling. (1)

  • Austin, Texas is leading a national campaign to develop PHEV's (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles), which will increase hybrid fuel efficiency by 35%.

  • In New York City, Mayor Michael Bloomberg recently reversed his position on recycling and has begun developing a large scale recycling facility in Brooklyn.

  • And - "Twenty-eight states have developed strategies or action plans to reduce global warming emissions." (1) Most outspoken is the leadership of California's Governor, who has set strict targets for reducing his state's heat trapping emissions. Gov. S's plan is earning endorsements from environmental & public health-oriented groups around the country.

"Global Warming" is caused primarily by the incineration of fossil fuels for energy & transportation. Broad scientific research has reported & substantiated everything from "The world's oceans are 1 warmer than 50 years ago ...& Spring comes a week earlier," to "Arctic ice core samples indicate the current rate of planetary warming has not been seen for over 650,000 years." Global Warming's net effect creates "Climate Change" -- meaning Climate Instability, which destabilizes the natural balance we all depend on, and causes more frequent large, violent storm systems, such as Katrina & Rita. . . Among other things. The Pentagon recently reported (2003) that Global Warming was more of a threat to US National Security than "global terrorism" or any other single concern.

SACRAMENTO --- On April 27 of this year, the Union of Concerned Scientists brought nearly 40 scientists from 15 California universities to the state capital for the first "UCS California Climate Science Education Day." Scientists talked to key decision makers about the projected impacts global warming could have on their districts and on California in general. UCS policy experts discussed the importance of pending legislation to reduce petroleum use in the state, increase renewable energy, and require new vehicles to carry labels detailing global warming emissions. At the end of the day, the UCS had helped to educate 52 legislative offices as well as other high-level staff in the governor's office and state environmental agencies. Good stuff!
