Our good friends at Alliance To Save Energy have an interesting way of describing the effects of drafts caused by unsealed gaps. They say it's like using your air conditioner to cool the whole neighborhood! Even well insulated homes often have these gaps. Typically, they are found around windows and doors. But any opening where plumbing, duct work or electrical wiring comes in through walls, floors and ceilings can also be air leaking culprits! Sealing these gaps can easily save you 20% on heating and cooling costs. Caulk is useful where gaps are small (narrow cracks and gaps up to a few millimeters) and where a more finished look is desired. Mastic is better for repairing damaged and leaking air ducts and sealing conditioned spaces from air infiltration. Spray Foam easily fills larger gaps and expands to fill spaces, as well as provide some insulation. Either way, we’ve got your gaps covered here!
