"The Designers Accord is a global coalition of designers, educators, researchers, engineers, and corporate leaders, working together to create positive environmental and social impact," made up of over 100,000 members, representing 100 countries.
Corporate product and packaging designer, Valerie Casey, was on a 50 seat jet, return business flight, when her "spear through the heart moment" came. Having just pitched packaging and diaper design to a couple of the world's largest manufacturers, Ms. Casey was feeling powerless.
That was the winter of 2007. Green skepticism reigned in corporate board rooms and, professionally speaking, Ms. Casey was not at liberty to recommend eco-sustainable approaches to her corporate clients. However, in response - and on that fateful plane flight, Ms. Casey created a Kyoto Protocol for the design world, which empowered both her better self and her global collective of professional peers.
“The shared mind is more powerful than the individual alone.” - Valerie Casey
The Good News
The Designers Accord requires signers to adopt professional policies of sharing, doing no harm, and instigating meaningful change. Signers agree to integrate sustainable design principles "into all practice and production," and forgo competition in favor of sharing. The Designers Accord envisions a future where sustainable innovation is catalyzed by collective intelligence building, so that collective innovation can occur more efficiently.... And with over 100,000 of the world's top designers getting on board in less than 12 months -- they're onto something.
